Mohawk

05 Mar 2009

Today, elite bloggers (slash homies) around the globe unite under the banner of free rock and roll, announcing killer line up for 2 day music carnival at the Mohawk and Club de Ville this month. This is the 3rd annual
HOT FREAKS freakdown and it seems to get better every single year. Our friends from FutureSounds (woxy dj's, fashion consultants, dancers, and dignitaries) also helped make this happen. Good work fellas. If you see one of these guys, FYI – CALL TMZ ASAP because theres money in that footage. They are elusive and are rarely seen outside of Monte Carlo. The blog posts are coming in too fast, but we were able to grab a few:

drunkard
gorilla
big heart
dodge kentucky
picasso
RSVP here

This year's event takes place Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21 at the Mohawk and Club Deville, and the insane lineup features 32 bands over two days, including:

Wrens (opening!)
Obits
Handsome Furs
The Rosebuds
Camera Obscura
Vivian Girls
Alela Diane
Jason Lytle
Harlem
The Hold Steady
American Analog Set
Jeremy Jay
Real Estate
the Grates
Girls
We Have Band
and many, many more...

In other news, in case you hadn't hrrrrrrrrd, KOOL KEITH is comin to town and rockin the Mohawk stage TONIGHT. Get your tickets yesterday.

And this weekend, we have the QUIET COMPANY CD RELEASE and PLANTS AND ANIMALS...Saturday is the legendary stylings of Austinist INDIEROKE and THE EASTERN SEA...and SUNDAY is the YELLOW BIKE PROJECT benefit show. A plethera of Pinatas for that ass.

As always — all are welcome — booga booga — love your tits.

Mohawk

03 Mar 2009

We realize that there is much planning that goes into this SXSW thing these days. I remember the days when homies from the street rolled around with a ripped out chronicle and a black sharpie. In the spirit of that, we at the Mohawk would like to give you a few SXSW planning styles that we have employed over the years...perhaps one will work for you. It is important to identify your style and partner up with a complimentary (not redundant) style to get the full effect. Examples of sweet style include:

-The MEGADWEEB. The megadork leverages virtually every new software out there to plan his/her week (s) in such a way that they miss most shows due to constant software updates and the fact that the iPhone doesnt have Flash (bitch!). The megadork uses software like this to make shit happen. The megadweeb has way more applications that you do, an extended battery pack, and is beta testing the SHIT out of stuff for next year. Use this kid as a GPS mapping tool if you are lost.

-The OPPORTUNIST (aka scenester, aka better dealer, aka asshole). This person says YES! to every event on FB and creepy event websites, and also says YES! to every text message and carrier pigeon that comes his/her way out of fear of 'missing something super wicked'. This person will ditch your ass at the drop of a headband (or a sniff of a justice tribute show). Don't trust the opportunist...but they WILL know where the free drinks are.

-The PURIST. This person needs no technology to create his/her plans for hearing good music. They watch as the schedules are created, quietly listen to new bands, and scribble shit on their little Lester Bangs mead mini spiral back pocket notebook. They wander alone through the valley of death (red river) finding the future of rock and roll by simply using olfactory and auditory senses, and they have zero appreciation for scenes, fashion, or hipsters. Make friends with this person, they will put you on the rock and probably some sweet grub too.

-The TOURIST. Wow. These kids are awesome. They planned everything on expedia and citysearch. They will text you first thing, first show on wednesday night about the 'most amazing band they have ever seen', and it was at Dizzy Rooster. The Tourist is fun to watch but tough to hang out with because between waiting in line to eat at Iron Cactus (respek) or taking a pedi-cab to go grab a picture of Stevie or the bats (respek), you will miss a shit ton of shows. Also, don't roll with this guy/gal to the St. Cecilia and try to hang out...they have installed tourist sensors that will immediately electrocute and embarrass you both. Keep the tourists number on you though...they may have a sweet crash pad because of their Amex miles or something.

-The SLACKER. This lazy ass SOB is fanfreakintastic. He/she ain't planning a damn thing. This person, in fact, may not even go to SX if the vaporizer is in full effect and there is a good pizza in the house. Can't get a ride? Fuck it. Favorite band is playing on Northloop? Fuck that. Long line at Mohawk? They can suck it, I'm gettin vaped. The only way the Slacker catches a sweet rock show is if you go and pick their ass up early, bring them to a gig (with passes/hook ups), feed them food, sit a random chair in front of a stage, and ask the singer to scream in their earhole the whole time.

-The ELITE. These bastards can suck my athletes foot cheeze toe. You know this dude/chick. They roll into every venue in white leather coats with hair product (while talking on their iPhone) at high speeds through the front door while telling the door dude to get the eff out of the way because they are on the list. The Elite have spent all year pounding martinis and making sure their assistant got them on every list in town so they can be seen at sold out shows. Their asst did the planning and programming of iPhone 'must do' schedule. The only cool thing about the Elite is when they are denied access somewhere. Its comedy. Molten lava shoots out of their eyeballs as they threaten jobs and say things like 'i'm gonna buy this place and face fuck all of you poor people'...this always ends perfectly as the Elite have zero fighting skills and the door dudes always quickly gut punch/head lock/flying knee them and toss them in the gutter so they can get back to work.

-The DRIFTER. Hang with the drifter. All will be well. The Drifter goes with the flow but digs good tunes, therefore needs no plan. The Drifter is a hybrid of the Slacker and the Purist (like the Minotaur) and simply lets the wind direct him/her to the rock. The Drifter is pretty connected, so he/she gets text updates on sweetness (free beer), random offers of rides in cars, and other people always hook the drifter up on RSVP lists, because they are so damn laid back. The Drifter almost always stumbles upon great music while everyone else is trying to get in the 'cool show'. Beware though, as the Drifter may roll off of red river somewhere and hit a crack pipe or end up on campus at some sorority SXSW fundraiser, so you gotta watch and steer the Drifter if you wanna catch all the good stuff.

-The HATER. No me gusta. This kid will totally bum you out, because not only does the hater not like lines or waiting for bands to start, but the hater also hates every band for 'not being Bowie' or 'ripping off Gang of Four'. The haters only plan or style is to talk shit and bitch. The Hater will have a software list (like Dweeb) of bands that he/she is ready to hate for sucking supreme balls. The Hater will also be blogging while hating, so that slows things down. The Hater hates Austin too, so your meals will be delayed by stories about the best brunch in Copenhagen and how Berlin is 'way more progressive than this douche scene'. Basically any new band that you see with the Hater will be mainstream by the end of their set. Heres the thing though...the hater LOVES this shit. It is like HATEFEST 09 for them. Their hate is deeply buried in a dungeon of love...and if you get them shitfaced they will totally spill the beans on the PM Dawn records in their car and the fact that they love watching Friday Night Lights and Rock of Love.

-The SWISS ARMY. These kids blend every every aspect of every style listed above into a renaissance man package of true Austin. They are totally cool to hang with. They hate certain bands, get on lists, are kinda lazy but know their shit, have software and RSVP hook ups, like to go with the flow, and aren't scared to catch a great show at a tourist venue. The Swiss Army is the culmination off all things Austin and why we love/hate this city and SXSW. The swiss army will be in the know but will only commit to whats awesome, because the Swiss Army knows they will be here next year. The Swiss Army has made the mistakes and learned, and therefore is the most well rounded and capable style of them all.

There are many more sweet styles to choose from, but much like a Kenyan safari for Nebraskans, we just showed you the fattest and most obvious ones. We hope that this helps you as you tackle the mosh of douchebaggery and fun and shit and rad and fun.

To help you on your journey, please find links to all Mohawk day and night shows on our calendar here. You will see that if you click 'ADD THIS' you can post the things you are going to on your online shit you play with.

Also, iPhoners, you can click here for an auto-RSS feed to your phone for real time updates. Yo MEGADWEEB, shout out to you and your homies. What what.

Almost all shows have been updated at this point with a few key hold outs.

Best to you and to your style,

Mohawk

PS: Heres a boss tune for your ass. They play on Thursday 3/19 afternoon.

And some people that are not playing the hawk this year:

And

02 Mar 2009

It's that time of year, Nuck's hibernation is over and he's thirsty. Check out what we've got coming up, just for you.

19 Feb 2009

Men, lay down your blades. let your beards run free. for together, on this glorious Friday night, we will rise as woolly outcasts, heathens, and warriors once more. we howl at the moon as we celebrate the ancient art of slackery at Misprints Beard and Mustache competition.

after you wake and wipe the best wurst crust from your beard from the night before...you must pound agua, eat queso, and get your game ready for the legendary Pop Unknown reunion show on Saturday. Get there early, as the paparazzi will surely clog the doorways with camera equipment and beer guts.

Yes, we know more than anyone that 2 days in a row at the Mohawk is exhausting and challenging to the mind, body, soul, and liver. The only thing worse than a 2 day hawk bender is the thought of dealing with the fact that you missed these gigs, and will be remembered forever as grand chancellor of d-baggery. No one wants that. So buckle up...and let us pour beer on our beards together and howl at the moon in the name of fellowship.

17 Feb 2009

In other news today...This wednesday, Happy Hour gets pimped by celebrities.

Beard and Moustache host, yoga instructor, oragami artist, and professional boozehound Matt Bearden notified the Mohawk yesterday that he would actually have a 5 hour layover in Austin on his flight from Copenhagen to Venice Beach...which would allow him sometime to meet teenage girls and then come by and show us how to make a one of his famous 'Beard Bomb' cocktails for happy hour. We proudly accepted.

As if that wasnt enough...former chilean priest, dogtown skater, and Pop rock legend Tim Lasater of Pop Unknown (rumor of reunion show) will be joining in to school the hipsters on 'what a real f*ckin drink should taste like'. He plans on pouring whiskey shots and punching people in the mouth.

Soundtrack features Hall and Oates, Journey, and Foreignor. Dig it:

T & M Guest-Tend from matt bearden is fucking lumberjack on tits.

See you there.

CUBE: THIS SUNDAY. FOR REAL.
**READ THIS: Although we are monster fans of Ice Cube and his records over the years, we personally do not support the views of his opening act, Trick Trick, when it comes to gay rights and more simply put, human rights. Openers generally come with the package on big events like this, and to be honest, we didnt even check this guy out until last week. He is clearly an idiot.
At the Mohawk, as it always has been, and will always be a policy of ALL ARE WELCOME. This includes geeks, politicians, homosexuals, heterosexuals, teachers, students, hipsters, punks, freaks, squares, bankers, lawyers, artists, metal heads, moms, dads, sons and daughters...and yes...sometimes even assholes like Trick Trick. I don't think he will feel too welcome at this event though, and I hope he doesn't. His personal statements are counter to the culture that has developed at the Mohawk, so my guess is he will be there for the electricity on stage, get heckled, and leave.
As you know, as a music venue, we can't get in the business of policing free speech or projecting our personal religious or political beliefs on shows because we would probably have to cancel half of what is booked if we really looked into certain lyrics, records, etc. Essentially, everything we know about great music is that it comes from the freedom to scream, yell, speak your mind, and sometimes...piss people off. We don't like or agree with everything we hear, but we love the fact that this country allows everyone to speak freely and without abandon. It is that ideal that makes music great.

With that said, as a live music venue we don't believe in censorship...but as individuals, we feel like Trick Trick crosses a very important line and it's not OK with us. As for me, I will be showing up when the headliner begins and not before. PS: THE HEADLINER STARTS AT TEN (HINT)

AS FOR ICE CUBE...WE FRIGGIN LOVE THAT KID AND ARE STOKED TO SEE HIM ON OUR STAGE.
Tickets are limited, here

AND...
Everyday from 5-8pm, we ice down the beers, crank up the funk, warm up some whiskey, and stoke the fire for MOHAWK FIREPLACE HAPPY HOURS. Cheap drinks and a hot ass time for you and your homies.

NOT SO SECRET SHOW THIS SATURDAY: IT'S SHIT YOU LOVE TO GET DOWN TO. PROMISE.

If you are a Mohawk regular, you have had your tits rocked off many times by the White Denim over the past 2 years. You have seen them grow from 4 songs to over 3 records worth of music, but you have not, until today been able to purchase a full length album. You have danced, you have spat beer, you have sang along, but you have not taken their record home to infect others with its brilliance.

Do not fret. For today, White Denim launched their digital music store at www.whitedenimmusic.com. Here.

We support local music and we support White Denim. We raise our glass to the fucking cojenes that these guys have for releasing their 1st record online, no major label, and on a completely new platform for giving rowdy rock and roll to the world at large. Bravo, White Denim, Bah-fucking-vo.

Buy this record today and get ready for your earhole to be rodgered by a spaceship filled with ghosts of the Allman Brothers, MC5, the Stooges, The Ramones, Jefferson Airplane, and your Aunt Kathy on meth.

Last night was insane. The stuff of legend. And fire. And beer.

PHOTOS FROM LAST NITE
Here are some words from our good friend Nash Cook:
What can you say about Monotonix playing at Mohawk last night? It was a blur. Not just a blur of moments and drinks ordered between songs but a blur of who was holding you up against the mass of dancing, shouting, screaming bodies who threw beer as if dollars had lost no cents as if we weren't in a financial crisis and even if we were they at the end of the night screamed fuck you as they stamped on red river til ambulances shot down that long narrow road that leads to venues who'd quiver and die if an Israeli band brought their music out into the streets for 500+ to smash and bang and wail against all odds. But then again that's why the Mohawk exists. Anything is possible.

When was the last time you saw a garage punk band from Isreal bring a hefty dose of Tel Aviv to your hometown? These guys live make gogol bordello and LSV look like choir singers at an old folks home.

And some more...

The show is this Thursday. Hold on to your tits.

Inside...Outside...Tell me whatcha saw.  Feel the fire baby.  Have you ever stuffed a shitload of krystal hamburgers in your mouth (kind of like the Belushi Animal House cafeteria scene) and it clogged your beathing and almost killed you from burger suffocation but it was still somehow fantastic and glorious?

This weekend at the Mohawk will be like that, but instead of burgers stuffed in your cakehole, massive amounts of rock will be crammed in your earhole to your brains delight.  Time to plan your attack:

SUNSET RUBDOWN     COOL KIDS        VOXTROT        GRAND OLE PARTY

Thursday is a local peanut and better and jelly sandwich (toasted) with fun dip and queso (GOLDEN BEAR, LOXSLY, BUBBLES).  Thursday will also be topped off with a Special sneak peak happy hour show from PURE LUCK and HONKY, featuring our frinds from the legendary Butthole Surfers. Friday is RSVP only bitches (COOL KIDS, VOXTROT, BELAIRE), and first come first serve.  Saturday is a tasty cinnamon roll fresh out the quebec oven of indie rock (SUNSET RUBDOWN, GRAND OLE PARTY, HOSPITAL SHIPS), and Sunday is the poetic brillaince of our very own San Franciso synth treat (MASTER SLASH SLAVE).  Dont worry, they like guitars too.

Special guest DJs plan to pimp the stage as well throughout the weekend, so bring some binaca and sharpies.

All in all, The Mohawk can't wait to punch it's fists into it's face and spray this awesomeness all over you and your posse.  See you on Thursday.

From Sean at Daytrotter on Sunset Rubdown:

The first response to a Sunset Rubdown song
has to be a powerful one. Take yourself, for instance, and now think of
yourself as a sliding glass door, just Windexed up, clear as a contact
lens. You’re just locked in, keeping the inside in and the outside out,
providing the boundary between nature and the dining room table. Then
BAM! A sparrow slams right into your windowy chest and falls limply to
the concrete ground below. Spencer Krug’s songs make you feel like both
the sparrow and the sliding glass door. You’re dumbfounded and dismayed
because the music is like a raging bonfire that catches the bottoms of
your pant legs ablaze and then hits you between the eyes with shovel.
So you burn and you pay attention. It jars something loose and gives
you life in the places of your body that don’t get courted enough by
modern song. It feels miraculous and so human it hurts because you
begin to question how much you’re really getting out of your own life
if Krug is able to get so much out of his that it yields such
insightful observations and celestial verses. He’s winning and you’re
just merely participating. It’s not true, really, but it is true that
he has a way of capturing the burning embers of whatever’s worth caring
about and whatever’s most savory. We were lucky enough to spend parts
of three days with Krug, his band and tour mates Frog Eyes when a
fortunate three-day hole in their tour schedule left them without any
shows and here in Iowa. We gave them a home, let them use a shower, a
computer and watch the third season of Aquateen Hunger Force. Never
before have I even thought it appropriate to say that the songs speak
for themselves, but it has never been truer. For Daytrotter, Sunset
Rubdown played one gorgeous new song called “Winged/Wicked Things” and three versions of songs that are strikingly different from their
recorded versions. “They Took A Vote And Said No” came about when we
had less than three minutes left on our 15-minute reel of tape. Krug
said, “I think we can do it” and then went at the song in warp s peed
to the glee of all the members of Frog Eyes in the control room. This
is special and I expect to hear about it. – Sean Moeller

I have seen you in the morning. Its not pretty. You may not even know how you look or smell. From straying hair in the air to booty breath, there is zero acceptable reason for leaving your house. I have no idea how you expect to get your sauce on while stage diving to the Murder City Devils the night before and still pop up in the morning and operate as a relatively productive member of society. Shame on you.

You are not alone though. Don't fret. With the fall of Maxwell House, the disappearance of Juan Valdez, and the international disdain for the Starbucks brand, Mohawk and Progress Coffee saw the opportunity to join tribes and shock the world. We are here to help.

So get your ass up to Progress or Whole foods and load your throat-hole up with some hot caffeine syrup brilliance. Put your mouth where rock and roll meets progressive coffee excellence. Your eyes will pop open, the sun will rise, and you will enter a new world.

"Rock during the day with the Mohawk blend. Your friends will think you are cool."

Now available at the Mohawk as well. Buy some for your Aunt Kathy and be the coolest cousin at your Christmas Party. Respek.

06 Sep 2008

Check out the 2:00 minute mark on this youtube video. Get a little dose of Billeauds voice. This Mohawk show was a long time ago, and these guys have put in a ton of work since, but this gives you just a small idea of what they are capable of. I would advise wearing some sort of bra apparatus or something if you dont want your tits rocked off. I also might advise workboots or moonboots if you dont want your new turquoise vans melted down on the molten hot new order dance floor.

Before this joint was the Mohawk, and after it was the Velvet Spade, it was known as a fledgling rock club by the name of '912 Red River'. 912 Red River opened in July of 2006. The grand opening of 912 Red River was driven by the likes of The Lemurs while accompanied on stage by the now Mohawk Grizzly Bear. Legendary and magical wilderness night of Lemur rock. Stories of this epic night are carved in stone and echo through the halls of Red River to this day.

This new record is fantastic. The Lemurs are a serious band. Saturday night will be a serious kegger of good times, love and support for one of the best music teams in Austin. See you there.

From the land of Ian, Dischord, Bad Brains, Teen Idles, Minor Threat, S.O.A., Void, The Faith, DC Youth Brigade, Fugazi, Government Issue, Untouchables, and G-DUB BUSHWHACKER, we have another in the series of DC geniuses to make their way to our fine town. We have no idea who this guy is, but we like him already. He sees music regularly, he digs the Ponys and the Rosewood Thieves, and he is not scared of the Mohawk.

Im sure you have already heard, but if you haven't, Bill Callahan has announced that he is playing an intimate show tonite with his friends Thor and Jonathan (Shearwater). Bill is, in our humble opinion, is one of the greatest songwriters of our time, not to mention a good friend and great guy. If you arent hip to his music by now, dammit, you should be. Take the time to listen to his writing, it will change you.

Here are some more details:

Get there early, there will be limited viewing space. At his request, Bill will be playing on the original stage set up (inside), underneath the projection screen, the rusted eagle, and the wooden elk. There is room for less than 80 people in there, so if you want to see it (and you remember this), you know what to do.

We will probably open the green room upstairs for booze and lounging as well. If you want to get there early, we will be there....engulfed in Smog.

A big thanks to Bill for thinking of us. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Some amazing footage of Bill below shot by our friends at Super! Alright! and KUT:

No. 6 Bill Callahan – "Nothing Rises To Meet Me" from Retread Sessions on Loved by Mohawk.

For our international friends that couldn't make it tonite, here is the rest of Bill's schedule through May:

Sun Mar 30 Austin, TX Mohawk
Wed May 14 London, England St. James
Fri May 16 Paris, France L'Europeen
Sun May 18 Berlin, Germany Privatclub
Mon May 19 Cologne, Germany Gebaude 9

Sun May 25 Napoli, Italy Circolio degli Artisti
Tue May 27 Milan, Italy Magnolia

THE ONION AND FRVRRR PRESENT: TOKYO POLICE CLUB
with: TILL WE'RE BLUE, THE LAUGHING, CAR STEREO (WARS)
MONDAY NIGHT, MAR 10, 2008

"Canadian foursome Tokyo Police Club, denizens of the young side of things, should be college (sorry, university) students somewhere, getting into bars legally for the first time and mastering the fine art of term paper procrastination. Instead, they find themselves never-endingly out on the hard road with the likes of Art Brut, Cold War Kids and others, continuing to develop a sound that capitalizes on short bursts of energy, fast-twitch muscles and lyrics that gravitate toward a future that involves children handcrafting spaceships by fluorescent light when they should be sacked out with their stuffed animals hugged tightly"
-DAYTROTTER

LEARNING SECRETS SECRET SXSW PRE PARTY

WEDNESDAY (DAY), MAR 12, 2008

"Austinist & Gothamist are proud to announce our day party, taking place on Wednesday, March 12 at the Mohawk. The party kicks off around 11 a.m., and the day ends at 6, but not before Shout Out Louds, Shearwater, Liam Finn and Phosphorescent perform.

This year, we'll be joined by Daytrotter, who will be streaming some of the performances live on the web, and local talent Annie Ray will be working hard in her photo booth as well.

As usual, the party is free, open to all. See you then!"

-AUSTINIST

RHAPSODY PRESENTS: CLIPSE, CUT COPY, SONS & DAUGHTERS
with: BRISTISH SEA POWER, NO AGE, & MORE
THURSDAY (DAY), MAR 13, 2008

"If you don't think that rhymes about selling cocaine can be delightful, then you should hear "We Got It 4 Cheap Vol. 2," an impressive exercise in hip-hop formalism. Both brothers have tough, thin, back-of-the-throat voices. (They were joined onstage, as they are on the mixtape, by their protégés Ab-Liva and Sandman.) And despite their grim subject matter, you can tell they're rhyming for the pure thrill of it. The mood stays deadpan, but each stanza is an ode to the joys of internal rhymes, sly punch lines, slick threats."
-NEW YORK TIMES on CLIPSE

SECRETLY CANDIAN/JAGJAGUWAR/DEAD OCEANS PRESENT: BLACK MOUNTAIN, JENS LEKMAN, & MORE
with: BON IVER, EVANGELICALS, & MORE
THURSDAY (NIGHT), MAR 13, 2008 (SXSW EVENT)

"This showcase rocked my tits off last year and rodgered the earhole of a generation. Dont miss it, dickweed."
-CASH NUGENT

HOT FREAKS! PRESENT: BRITISH SEA POWER, BLITZEN TRAPPER, WHITE DENIM, AND MORE
with: CADENCE WEAPON, JASON COLLETT, AND MORE
FRIDAY (DAY), MAR 14, 2008 (AT HAWK & CLUB DE VILLE)

"No comment. If you dont know about this party already, you are probably a McCain voter...and a raging douchebag"
-QUENTIN COOLEY

ECSTATIC PEACE PRESENTS: THURSTON MOORE & BAND
with: BE YOUR OWN PET, TALL FIRS, & MORE
FRIDAY (NIGHT), MAR 14, 2008 (SXSW EVENT)

What's on Sonic Youth's road tape?
"Flipper. Flipper still rules. Montrose. Sparks-like, pre-Georgio Moroder Sparks. But some of that's on there. Bar-Kays. You know, that kind of stuff. The new CD-Rs from (former Hardkiss vanity label) Sunburn, we've been listening to those a lot, they're really good."
-THURSTON

HOT FREAKS! PRESENT: ISLANDS, PEELANDER-Z, & MORE
with: A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS, & MORE
SATURDAY (DAY), MAR 15, 2008 (AT HAWK & CLUB DE VILLE)

"Man, I just made a comment about the other Hot Freaks Party that you just read...you are a raging douchebag"
-QUENTIN COOLEY

FREE AGENCY/TODD P PRESENTS: DAN DEACON, MATT & KIM, HIGH PLACES, & MORE
with: THESE ARE POWERS, PONY TAIL, & MORE
SATURDAY (NIGHT), MAR 15, 2008 (SXSW EVENT)

"You should catch Dan Deacon. Actually you should catch all of thses crazy kids on this bill, Todd P knows what hes doing. Then, you should buy a 2 bedroom 2 bath bungalow from me in Cedar Park. Its a great investment. And walking distance from the donut shop"

You find me a better deal than that and I will punch myself in the cods (AND vote for Hillary).

27 Feb 2008

These are just some of the answers to the simple yet groundbreaking question these poor people ask in cities and villages around the globe: "Why are we poor?" In the tradition of James Agee's Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, 'The Poor People Band' struggles to confront poverty in all its hopelessness and brutality, its pride and abject fear, its fierce misery and its quiet resignation...all while slapping it in the face with sweet telecaster action. Poor People allows the poor to speak for themselves, explaining the causes and consequences of their impoverishment in their own cultural, social, and religious terms. This whole discussion is lubricated by loading doses of lonestar and getting your Austin soul jam on this Sunday.

There is the alcoholic mother in Buddhist Thailand, sure that her poverty is punishment for transgressions in a former life, and her ten-year-old daughter, whose faith in her own innocence gives her hope that her sin in the last life was simply being rich. There is the Siberian-born beggar who pins her woes on a tick bite and a Gypsy curse more than a half century ago, and the homeless, widowed Afghan women who have been relegated to a "respected" but damning invisibility. There are Big and Little Mountain, two Japanese salarymen who lost their jobs suddenly and now live in a blue-tarp hut under a Kyoto bridge. And, most haunting of all, there is the faded, starving beggar-girl, staring empty-eyed on the back steps of Austins Central Bus Station, whose only response to Poor Peoples query is simply, "I think I am rich."

The result of Poor Peoples fearless journey is a look at poverty and rock unlike any other. Complete with more than 10 powerfully affecting songs—taken of the interviewees by the band itself—this series of vignettes and searing insights represents a tremendous step toward an understanding of this age-old social ill. With intense compassion and a scrupulously unpatronizing eye and ear, Poor People invite their fans to recognize in our fellow human beings their full dignity, fallibility, pride, and pain, and the power of their hard-fought resilience and the extreme force that good old fashioned rock and roll can have on every one of us.

Come out to the Mohawk this Sunday and help out some Poor People, all while getting your rock on...

Check out this kid for some serious jams. Came across Mr. Rock through one of my favorite DJ's Cosmo Baker's myspace. I don't know much about this cat aside from him being a member of the great group Five Deez (out of Cincy). Get Kommunicator if you haven't its the real deal.

Now if you'll excuse me I need to go listen to "Fingertips Pt. 3.5" for the millionth time. Craziness.

If you are not hip to the El Paso Hot Button, you need to get there quick. One dude. He has infused his blood with awesome and rock and has been chasing chickens around in his backyard getting ready to release his ramble on the faces of unexpecting Austinites.

I know he's from Oklahoma, and I have no idea where the "El Paso" came from (maybe here), but someone snuck a White Stripes and a Jimmy Page record into his sandbox when he was a kid, and told him he could do it all by himself. Anyway, just know that Thursday, Feb 7th is your day to leave work early, go to the Grizzly Bar Happy Hour, get a loading dose cocktail, and lubricate your soul in preparation for the goods.

DIG ON THE VID:

If you havent heard already, local darlings, special homies, and bad-ass musicians WHITE DENIM are in the latest issue of Rolling Stone Magazine, full page style. As you know, the Mohawk has loved the WD since that first Fat Albert slap banged down on Turbos big rig. Truck drivers, landscapers, dancers, boozers, and friends. Thats what White Denim means to us. A team of renegade ramblers that arent scared to rock your tits off while stealing a risky business gaze off of your girlfriend at the show.

Here's to the coolest band we know, the most talented band we know, and the happiest band we know. Congratulations boys, its about to get real crazy for you. Long Live The Letter "D".

Listen to some of it here.

Check it out:

From 5-8, every day at the Grizzly Bar, drinks are so damn cheap, its like getting a cocktail at a garage sale, flea market, or Tijuana (respek). So, get your drink on at one of Austins best live music venues, and apparently, one of the best bars in America: DIG ON THIS

Wednesday's UP IN SMOKE happy hour will feature guest bartenders RGDG
from KOOP 91.7 Now Playing Austin serving
$1 Whiskey Shots, $1 PBR & High Life, $2-16oz Lone Star

But we dont just believe in cheap drinks at Happy Hour, we still believe in ordering good whiskeys and delivering them in a good pour with a good attitude. Old fashioned, yes. Awesome, absolutely. For Ramblers, no doubt.

Bring your piggy bank, meet some homies, and have a good time to one of the greatest music selections on Red River. Try a Beertunie. It will change your life.

If you've got a pair (or you dont), come and get your ramble on at the Mohawk.

We think we are so far from cool we cant even google map it.

But, we are proud of the fact that we are both a great bar AND a live music venue. Some of our Grizzly Bar Happy Hours (5-8) rival our best shows in terms of entertainment. You just have to be there to know what Im saying. Our new drink menu for 2008 will make a single bloody tear run down your face. Cocktails by the fire or herkies on the outside stage, its all good at 912 Red River.

Click on the link and log your vote. Plus, all press is good press I guess, and those guys at Esquire love to booze it. We know that already by their unrelenting and tireless efforts to report on whiskeys, drink mixes, and live music. They threw a Stooges show in Austin. They have some writers over there that know a bit about our town and about music today. So, with a pair of clinkers, a pipe, a shotgun, and a stick of slimjim, we respectfully nod our head (while looking over the top of our ray ban yellow shooters) in thanks to the rag that has the foresight to understand what we are trying to do here.

Regardless, click below and check it out. We love that music venues are being recognized, but we are a little scared of the fact that we are ranked next to a place called Club Duece in Miami Beach (respek). No offense, but it sounds like a great place to read a paper on the can and grind one out. Which is precisely why its my first stop next time I'm over there.

Thanks to Esquire. Big up. Long Live Sydney.

Another fine platter of hushed fuzz and splintered frets from Ben Chasny's mainstay, Six Organs of Admittance. Still channeling the dark lonesome spirits of some wooded acre, Chasny lays the vibes down heavy on Shelter from the Ash, a release that contrary to the title feels less easy than "shelter" might suggest. Heavy overtones of darkness and, if not fear certainly not calm pervade this album but maybe that's the point, its only a respite from the ongoing struggle and not permanent relief. Gentle strums and plucks give way to fuzzed electrics and atmospherics raging with wind and white noise. Definitely an album in tune with much that Chasny has issued under his Six Organs persona, but with a much more turbulent undercurrent than he's touched on in the past. Shelter is a fine album that stands as striking in the face of some disappointment with other frontrunners of the folk circle this year.

We got new Sound Gear for Christmas. It sounds like sexy chipmunks whispering in your ear. With martini breath. And a reach around.

If you are a band, plug in and you will see your future.

If you are a music fan, throw your earplugs in the garbage, and open your earhole for incoming missles.

Sound is what can be perceived by a living organism through its sense of hearing. Physically, sound is vibrational mechanical energy that propagates through matter as a wave.

For humans, hearing is limited to frequencies between about 20 Hz and 20000 Hz, with the upper limit generally decreasing with age. Other species may have a different range of hearing. As a signal perceived by one of the major senses, sound is used by many species for detecting danger, navigation, predation, and communication. In Earth's atmosphere, water, and soil virtually any physical phenomenon, such as fire, rain, wind, surf, or earthquake, produces (and is characterized by) its unique sounds. Many species, such as frogs, birds, marine and terrestrial mammals, have also developed special organs to produce sound. In some species these became highly evolved to produce song and (in humans) speech. Furthermore, humans have developed culture and technology (such as music, telephony and radio) that allows them to generate, record, transmit, and broadcast sounds.

C'mon Pitchfork. Man, we see you at our clubs all the time. We see you at New Bohemia and Curras talking on your iPhone to your mom about how much fun you are having. When SXSW rolls around, we are your favorite city in the world. You will write about us like you all live here, grew up here, and know every 'best breakfast taco joint' in town. So why is it that we gets no love for NYE? We gots love for you. And we know we arent Chicago (single tear). But we would appreciate the courtesy of a reach around every once in a while when you are writing about 'music scenes for new years'...or anything of a similar sort. We just want to be big boys, ya know? We want to roll like big cities, on 22's, dripping with ice, and engulfed by really cool skyscrapers. Pitchfork, we love you. We dont want digital intercourse really, but a longing gaze from across the room (web) would do us just fine. Happy New Year.

Love,

Austin

Pow! Right in the kisser. Tonite.

Have we mentioned lately that Party Ends is the sexiest, hardest working, local music loving, prog-tour promoting, drunkest, and danciest blog in the universe? If we havent, we suck. And Party Ends does not, becuase they continue to bring amazing lineups to great venues and creative locations all around our fine city. The Mohawk is blessed with one tonite (with our local faves Transmography). From Partyends.com:

Check out what the Onion has to say about the Astronautalis show tomorrow night!

“Indie-country-electro” rapper Astronautalis has shared the stage with everyone from A Tribe Called Quest to The Polyphonic Spree to Rancid, which indicates both how seamlessly he blends his indie-rock, IDM, and hip-hop influences and how schizophrenic the resulting songs are. “Meet Me Here Later,” from his sophomore album The Mighty Ocean And Nine Dark Theaters, is as good an introduction as any: Winkingly sentimental, it comes off like El-P sitting in with Built To Spill as remixed by The Postal Service. Also playing: Listener Project, Transmography.”

Preach it, the Onion. Preach it.

THE IROQUOIS THANKSGIVING ADDRESS

"Ohenton Kariwahtekwen"

GREETINGS TO THE NATURAL WORLD

THE PEOPLE

Today we have gathered and we see that the cycles of life continue. We have been given the duty to live in balance and harmony with each other and all living things. So now, we bring our minds together as one as we give greetings and thanks to each other as people.

Now our minds are one.

THE EARTH MOTHER

We are all thankful to our Mother, the Earth, for she gives us all that we need for life. She supports our feet as we walk about upon her. It gives us joy that she continues to care for us as she has from the beginning of time. To our mother, we send greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

THE WATERS

We give thanks to all the waters of the world for quenching our thirst and providing us with strength. Water is life. We know its power in many forms-waterfalls and rain, mists and streams, rivers and oceans. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the spirit of Water.

Now our minds are one.

THE FISH

We turn our minds to the all the Fish life in the water. They were instructed to cleanse and purify the water. They also give themselves to us as food. We are grateful that we can still find pure water. So, we turn now to the Fish and send our greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

THE PLANTS

Now we turn toward the vast fields of Plant life. As far as the eye can see, the Plants grow, working many wonders. They sustain many life forms. With our minds gathered together, we give thanks and look forward to seeing Plant life for many generations to come.

Now our minds are one.

THE FOOD PLANTS

With one mind, we turn to honor and thank all the Food Plants we harvest from the garden. Since the beginning of time, the grains, vegetables, beans and berries have helped the people survive. Many other living things draw strength from them too. We gather all the Plant Foods together as one and send them a greeting of thanks.

Now our minds are one.

THE MEDICINE HERBS

Now we turn to all the Medicine herbs of the world. From the beginning they were instructed to take away sickness. They are always waiting and ready to heal us. We are happy there are still among us those special few who remember how to use these plants for healing. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to the Medicines and to the keepers of the Medicines.

Now our minds are one.

THE ANIMALS

We gather our minds together to send greetings and thanks to all the Animal life in the world. They have many things to teach us as people. We are honored by them when they give up their lives so we may use their bodies as food for our people. We see them near our homes and in the deep forests. We are glad they are still here and we hope that it will always be so.

Now our minds are one.

THE TREES

We now turn our thoughts to the Trees. The Earth has many families of Trees who have their own instructions and uses. Some provide us with shelter and shade, others with fruit, beauty and other useful things. Many people of the world use a Tree as a symbol of peace and strength. With one mind, we greet and thank the Tree life.

Now our minds are one.

THE BIRDS

We put our minds together as one and thank all the Birds who move and fly about over our heads. The Creator gave them beautiful songs. Each day they remind us to enjoy and appreciate life. The Eagle was chosen to be their leader. To all the Birds-from the smallest to the largest-we send our joyful greetings and thanks.

Now our minds are one.

THE FOUR WINDS

We are all thankful to the powers we know as the Four Winds. We hear their voices in the moving air as they refresh us and purify the air we breathe. They help us to bring the change of seasons. From the four directions they come, bringing us messages and giving us strength. With one mind, we send our greetings and thanks to the Four Winds.

Now our minds are one.

THE THUNDERERS

Now we turn to the west where our grandfathers, the Thunder Beings, live. With lightning and thundering voices, they bring with them the water that renews life. We are thankful that they keep those evil things made by Okwiseres underground. We bring our minds together as one to send greetings and thanks to our Grandfathers, the Thunderers.

Now our minds are one.

THE SUN

We now send greetings and thanks to our eldest Brother, the Sun. Each day without fail he travels the sky from east to west, bringing the light of a new day. He is the source of all the fires of life. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Brother, the Sun.

Now our minds are one.

GRANDMOTHER MOON

We put our minds together to give thanks to our oldest Grandmother, the Moon, who lights the night-time sky. She is the leader of woman all over the world, and she governs the movement of the ocean tides. By her changing face we measure time, and it is the Moon who watches over the arrival of children here on Earth. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to our Grandmother, the Moon.

Now our minds are one.

THE STARS

We give thanks to the Stars who are spread across the sky like jewelry. We see them in the night, helping the Moon to light the darkness and bringing dew to the gardens and growing things. When we travel at night, they guide us home. With our minds gathered together as one, we send greetings and thanks to the Stars.

Now our minds are one.

THE ENLIGHTENED TEACHERS

We gather our minds to greet and thank the enlightened Teachers who have come to help throughout the ages. When we forget how to live in harmony, they remind us of the way we were instructed to live as people. With one mind, we send greetings and thanks to these caring teachers.

Now our minds are one.

THE CREATOR

Now we turn our thoughts to the creator, or Great Spirit, and send greetings and thanks for all the gifts of Creation. Everything we need to live a good life is here on this Mother Earth. For all the love that is still around us, we gather our minds together as one and send our choicest words of greetings and thanks to the Creator.

Now our minds are one.

CLOSING WORDS..........

We have now arrived at the place where we end our words. Of all the things we have named, it was not our intention to leave anything out. If something was forgotten, we leave it to each individual to send such greetings and thanks in their own way.

Now our minds are one.

Think pearl harbor, but with droney stoner metal, monster amps, looming smoke, and explosive gongs and guitars. The Mohawk was Hawaii. Wow. These kids are amazing. Long live Boris. This shit makes me want to buy a t-top camaro (iroc-z). And earplugs. eh?

Its a good time to be in Austin. The weather is fantastic (for the next 4 weeks at least), the cocktails are cold, and the music coming through town is mind blowing [ shhhh ]. So, for those of you that couldnt make it, Jesu was impressive in every way. Only if they had one more 'S' in their name, they could get so much more well deserved press...

JESU

Like a warm brownie in your ear canal. At 1AM, they took the stage on a Wednesday to bring 200 of us something that would have blown away a stadium full of music lovers. Think of Pelican, think of the Cure, think of Sigur Ros, think of some early 'minus maynard' Tool stuff and then cram them in a salad shooter.

It took two bands to do the same job on Saturday, but they were equally amazing:

BLITZEN TRAPPER

CROWD

TWO GALLANTS

Blitzen Trapper (Portland) and Two Gallants (SF) brought great crowds and serious live shows to the outside stage. Really. If you are a hard working band looking to 'break out'... ummm, well, get in line. These 2 west (sf/prt) coast bands have figured some things out. Take the time to check them out and buy their records.

*special thanks to nash and to keith gaddis for the photography

Austinist Show Review: A Victorian Pageant at The Mohawk

Advertised with tongue-in-cheek flair as a “frotean festival! of the fantastique” and “an evening most thrilling!”, the Victorian Pageant at the Mohawk on the 6th was indeed a unique experience, and a sprightly, fun show even when it didn’t exactly keep with the theme of corsets and humours.

Photos of Moth!Fight! courtesy Super!Alright!!!

The Noise Revival Orchestra were the first band to play the main, outside stage, and what an Orchestra they were. Dressed in full, fanciful regalia, the many-piece ensemble consisted of three percussionists, at least three keys players, multiple vocalists, brass, woodwinds, and more. An Austin band that formed up in the summer of ’06, the Orchestra actually aren’t huge on noise, but on multi-faceted pieces that employ vigorous instrumentation and swiftly changing structures. It’s easy to imagine this group growing out of a music majors’ gab session, and the percussionists alone were exciting to watch. At best some of the songs did sound close to epic, and at worst it sounded like Winn Butler fronting a marching band. Either way, it was a nice change of pace from the usual indie four-piece.

Ume started things inside with their loud, pulsating noise-rock, one of the evening’s bands who didn’t try at all to be Victorian in the least. Outside, a real barbershop quartet (and not a band called Barbershop Quartet) enthused the crowd with a few very old and just plain old tunes, explained some of the history of their craft, and ended their performance with a Beach Boys medley – and were easily one of the best-received groups of the evening. While Moth Fight readied their set with a very intricate sound-check, the Mohawk slowly filled up with people who began to browse some of the exhibits, available on both upper decks. Natrix Natrix set up a spirit photography booth, The Musuem of Artificial and Natural Ephemera had some of their namesake ephemera on display, including a jar of something viscous and disgusting, and Uncommon Objects also had some of their least common wares to show off. Spectators were also asked to gaze into a box to watch a flickering screen (a makeshift “nickelodeon”) and those interested had their countenances explained by the bumps on their head by a phrenology expert/person who just pretended to be an expert.

Inside, Attack Formation also took time to get their sound ready, but before too long the sometimes seven-piece band were out of the gates and rocking it up. Although the guitar onslaught and big riffs both a little bruised and brash recall bits of loud indie forebears like Archers of Loaf, softer touches like stray trumpet bursts and the female background vocals are what made them difficult to stop watching. Definitely recommended.

Even though the band Numbers officially closed the show, everything – from the out-there exhibitions to the general mood of the evening – belonged to Moth Fight, whose frenetic pop-psychedelia was best suited to the night’s peculiar theme. A five-piece group where almost every member plays at least three instruments, Moth Fight performed every one of their songs, and the care and craft of their set did not go unappreciated by the crowd. Even when their 3-D light show didn’t go as well as expected, the impressive rhythm section, grab-bag of instruments like singing saw, violin, and harpsichord (not to mention the sugary melodies) kept spirits high.

Given the night so far, recent Kill Rock Stars signees Numbers were something of a disappointment, as the trio was about as far from the period-piece mishmash of Moth Fight as could be. Vocalist and drummer Indra Dunis’ voice was almost drowned out by guitar noise, not to mention the aural battery done by Eric Landmark and his two synthesizers. While this might sound like a recipe for Loveless-era goodness, it had more in common with pop plebeians Mates of State than anything else.

The Mohawk really made an attempt to make a magical evening out of Saturday night, made manifest in the array of things to see, bands to hear, and those little touches that make the venue a warm, exciting place to spend part of your weekend. Here’s to many more “frotean festivals of the fantastique” in the near future.

Yeah, I will admit it. That shit was crazy. From the 'gaunlet', to the iPod debacle, to inspiring 300 people to sing a 'thank you' song to sheraton at 2AM on a Tuesday, this was a spectacle like none other.

You need to be in the right mental zone to get into a Dan Deacon show, but once you are there...its a kaleidescope of lights, sweat, dancing, hugs, and electricity.

Take the time to flip through these: Dan, you sir are the man. Thanks for bringin the Looney Tunes to Austin.

how it was made: In conjunction with a magnetic field and the load, the flux capacitor uses the hierarchical structure of the cosmos as a timer, to help sync the calendar with the stars. The trilamination of the tiny spheres with selected metals and their subjection to a magnetic field and current (sustained by the load) destabilizes the orderliness of the navigation, the heavier atom and the "content" of individual layers of metal. The website matter then seeks to re-establish itself in the "fractal set."

The trilamination inserts a "curve" where there ought to be none, between the communal structure and the next higher context of presence which is normally occupied by living things, beneath the solar niche and within the biospheric niche in a five to eleven dimensional collapsible schema of the universe accounting for all the phenomenon observed by rock fans as well as scientists. If you went, you got sweaty. If you didnt, ummm. Next year perhaps. Art Brut dropped the brit bomb, St.Vincent, Yellow Fever, White Denim, Grizzly bear (wow), Brazos, Car Stereo (wars), all brought their 'A' game. Anywho, a big thanks to all that helped with this event:

Johnny, Aquarium Drunkard, Brooklyn Vegan, La Blogotheque, My Old Kentucky Blog, Daytrotter, You Ain't No Picasso, Super Alright!
Thanks to Chromewaves, you can dig on some pics here
