Handmade in downtown Austin, Texas, The Mohawk Austin was reinvented in 2006 as a place for stout drinks, live music, and original events. Crafted by people who love the city, the sound, and the land in equal portions, this is also a place where all are welcome to get together and get down.
The Mohawk Austin draws its inspiration from the Native American culture of the Northeast, not from the hairdo. But if you've got one, feel free to bring it on over.
And the Texas capital is where we choose to pursue this adventure. This town has one of the single greatest collections of performing and visual talents in the world, so in the spirit of the Mohawk Nation, The Mohawk Austin was built and is driven by a tribe of Austinites who try everyday to bring something different to the table. From poster and digital art and clever renovation to booking and blogging, The Mohawk is the home to a diverse creative culture.
Stout Drinks
The Mohawk Austin believes in good pours, good times, and good old fashioned service. This bar has been built with the idea that all are welcome, and every show or happy hour should feel like you are at your own house party or in your backyard. Drop by any time; we will leave the light on for you.
Live Music
The Mohawk Austin believes there is more raw talent on bikes and in mini-vans than in most of the tour busses out there. That has always been our focus, and is the focus of our booking partners (Transmission Entertainment), to seek out those bands and bring them to our stages.
The Mohawk Austin believes in supporting emerging artists, original local talent, and struggling touring bands as well as unearthing new approaches to music, offering shows at a fair price, and using technology to bring this music to listeners worldwide. Through technology, many musicians that play Mohawk Austin stages can also use the web as a virtual stage to reach more listeners. So, whether you are walking down Red River or you are typing on your laptop, you can still catch a White Denim, Bill Callahan, Brazos, or Ghostland Observatory show. The Mohawk works everyday to bring the Austin experience to those that appreciate it, in the flesh or online.
Original Events
The Mohawk Austin is a unique indoor/outdoor space in the heart of downtown Austin. We are down for working with you on an original approach to music and events. We work with many groups in the community to create events that are truly unique. Over the past year, we have worked with the following organizations:
The Austinist :: Rhapsody:: DCI Leisure Group :: Hot Freaks! :: Flatstock :: SXSW :: Texas Playboys :: The Onion :: Witty Pioneers :: Party Ends :: KEXP :: Secretly Canadian :: Woopsy Magazine :: KOOP :: Jajaguar :: Gorilla vs Bear :: Progress Coffee :: Austin Chronicle :: Chow.com :: Ecstatic Peace :: Coyote Funeral screening :: AMODA :: KUT :: TCU :: The Farm :: KVRX :: Rare Fashion Attack :: Rock n Romp :: Texas Rollergirls :: Children of the World benefit :: Urban Pollution
We work hard to keep this venue unique and to secure the experience. Please keep in mind the following when booking a private event:
- We book the bands and work with you on handling talent for your event. Please call us with enough lead time. Please don’t pre-book a shitty band.
- For photography and videography, we have exclusive vendor agreements that allow you to get high quality results at a low cost.
- Signage and video projection are possible, but we work with you to place it.
- Food service are available for catered food. We have recommendations based on past events. And a large walk in cooler.

The Inspiration
The people of the Six Nations, also known by the French term, Iroquois Confederacy, call themselves the Haudenosaunee (“ho-de-noe-sho-nee”), meaning “People Building a Long House.” Located in the northeastern region of North America, originally the Six Nations was five and included the Mohawk Nation (keepers of the eastern door), Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas. The sixth nation, the Tuscaroras, migrated into Iroquois country in the early 18th century. Together these peoples comprise the oldest living participatory democracy on earth. Their story and governance, based on the consent of the governed, contains a great deal of life-promoting intelligence for those of us not familiar with this area of American history. The original United States representative democracy, fashioned by such authors as Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, drew much inspiration from this confederacy of nations. In our present day, we can benefit immensely by drawing inspiration from the 800-year-old practices of Six Nations. As one of the six nations, the Mohawk were known for their skills in the art of war, loyalty, strength, love for the earth, and most notably, their resourcefulness. The vision of The Mohawk Austin is to use what has been learned to effectively recreate some elements of that culture through the booking, design, and personality of this new adventure. Members of the Mohawk Nation now live in settlements throughout New York State and Southeastern Canada. These areas also happen to be fruitful ground for some of our best new music today. To creatively blend this with elements of our local Austin music scene and culture is our quest and journey. It is this powerful culture that inspires us to this day.
